Just tattooed a replica of the oldest known figurative tattoo in history - found on ‘Ginger’, a naturally mummified body over 5,000 years old from Predynastic Egypt. The ink shows two horned animals: a long-horned bull and a Barbary sheep, etched into skin using soot or ash. This ancient art isn’t just decoration, it’s a powerful link to identity, symbolism, and culture from the dawn of history. Honoured to bring it back to life through tattoo. This year I obtained my tattoo licence. Joined the @studiolovetherocktattoos team as a hand-poke tattoo artist. Been mentored and trained by Ruth @studiolovetherock, supported and mentored by my team mates @rhiatatt0_o and @cherri.inkz, and morale support from @vampyre_piercings - with this all guidance I started machine tattooing and I fucking love it. First ever machine tattoo for Ruth this week. 🖤 The process is so different compared to handpoking. With handpoking I’m gripping a needle with a few millimetres to grip onto and moving up and down to get the ink into the skin, dot by dot, with machine tattooing you’re gripping something really thick and trying to pull really smooth lines. Your mum, Mia, mid-labour, was so excited to see me at the birth of her pups - went and picked you up and plonked you in my hands… 2 weeks before you were born I woke from a dream and told Lola about a little inky pup. I chased it down the corridors of an abandoned building and everytime I caught it, it would discombobulate into black Ink, drip through my fingers, and recombobulate before bounding off again, just out of reach. As Mia placed you in my hands, Lola looked at me and said “It’s Ink” “I know!!” - that moment will forever be etched in my memory. You faced your first eviction the same day, and lived with us occupying abandoned buildings across Manchester. You were a squat dog, part of the pack, resisting, reclaiming, defiant! At the Wonder (how they got) Inn, you’d escape from the pen with your sister Baloo… Uncle Bondi nicknamed you both Inkstigator and Hoodinee. You and your siblings are one of the reasons I fell in love with Danny. In the morning you’d all pile onto us, in a big puppy puddle, before we’d take you all onto the park to explore. We connected through a mutual love and care for you. I feel you helped ‘choose’ him. When we moved to Preston New Road you spent a week or so with your Aunty Lola whilst we got settled in. When a group of men followed her down the canal one evening you ran from the darkness and chased them away. You were a warrior. At PNR, you chased cats with Maple on New Hope Anti-Franking camp. You did night shifts with me, Di, Liz and Mapes at gate camp. You were a camp dog and an activist. When we stayed at Aunty Vix’s flat when Asia was pregnant- you got soooo distressed when she went into labour that you wet the floor. I slept right through all the excitement. You were empathic, caring and loving. And when we found out we were expecting Charlie, you’d rest your head on my expanding belly. You were my constant in an ever-changing tide. …Cont.

With handpoke tattooing the ink is applied dot by dot. For @tonkabell131’s Handala tattoo we used a 12-gauge 9-round shader needle. These need a little more pressure than liner needles as they cover a bigger area and also need a couple more passes over the line to get the solidity. The whole process is slower than a machine tattoo but many say it is less painful. Great care is taken to avoid causing unnecessary abrasion to the skin and the process is thoughtful and careful. Handala is depicted as a ten-year-old boy, barefoot and dressed in ragged clothes, with his back turned and hands clasped behind him. His most striking feature is his perpetual youth—he never grows older, symbolising the eternal innocence and unchanging plight of Palestinian refugees. Naji al-Ali, who was born in the Palestinian village of Al-Shajara and later became a refugee, created Handala during a period of intense political turmoil. Al-Ali introduced Handala in his cartoons to represent his own experience of displacement and the collective suffering of the Palestinian people. The current system of 'democracy' in the UK gives the illusion of power to the people, but in reality, it grants citizens a coerced vote every few years, after which the elected party wields de facto power over them, which isn't genuinely democratic. Democratic confederalism is a political idea from Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan and the Kurdish movement in Rojava (Northern Syria). It offers an alternative to traditional nation-states, focusing on decentralised, participatory governance. Power is spread across local councils and assemblies instead of being centralised. This means local communities make decisions through consensus-based assemblies. The system promotes the coexistence of diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious groups, supports sustainable living, and places a strong emphasis on gender equality, often requiring co-leadership by men and women in councils. The UK’s political system, with its centralised parliamentary democracy, often feels disconnected from citizens' daily lives. To make UK politics more participatory and community-focused, inspired by democratic confederalism, several changes could be made. First, decentralising power is essential. Strengthening local councils to make decisions affecting their communities and forming community assemblies for local issues can make governance more responsive and inclusive. Introducing direct democracy mechanisms is another crucial step. More referendums and citizen initiatives would allow people to propose and vote on policies directly. The first Palestine demo I joined was back in 2017, in Manchester, carrying cardboard coffins representing those murdered by Israeli forces. “No Justice, No Peace” everyone shouted at the top of their lungs. Everyone wants PEACE. There can be no peace without JUSTICE. And there is no justice until everyone is afforded FREEDOM. People can be ‘peaceful’ and still wear the chains of oppression. I’d read a quote by author, Phil K Dick, “It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane” and it resonated with me… because when our reality, and that of our kin, is plagued with suffering, exploitation, and horrors that words can not articulate… how are we meant to be to be ‘sane’. Our collective mental health dwindles - it’s a product of a broken civilisation and a perfectly NORMAL response to a frightening reality. It’s hard seeing people sleeping in doorways, humans on the brink of starvation whilst others throw food into bins, people being massacred… and to just go about your day. Anxiety and pain - that’s normal - it shows you’re awake. That said, please don’t despair, there are many humans on this little rock coming together to facilitate change.
